The Government of Nigeria has announced suspension of popular microblogging site Twitter in its country indefinitely citing persistant use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
This comes days after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet was removed for breaching the microblogging site’s rules. A situation which many have described as a way of thwarting citizens’ freedom of speech and accessing information.
In the statement, the government has tasked the broadcasting regulator, NBC, to start the process of licensing all OTT [internet streaming services] and social media operations in Nigeria.
