TWO-time Zimbabwean Paralympics gold medalist Elliott Mujaji says he is proud of Team Zimbabwe’s performance at the ongoing 2024 Paralympics games in Paris.
Zimbabwe was represented by two sprinters Kudakwashe Chigwedere and Tinotenda Bango, who competed in men’s 100- T47 and women’s 100-T47 respectively.
Chigwedere made it all the way to the men’s final, only to finish on 8th position .
He posted his Personal Best of 10.78 seconds, a new national record.
Bango also posted her Personal Best of 13.71 sec although she failed to progress beyond the heats.
Leading both athletes at the 2024 games as team coach, legendary Paralympian Elliott Mujaji told New Zimbabwe.com that he is proud of the duo’s performance.
“The athletes did very well since it’s their first time on a big stage like this, l am really proud of them posting their personal best times as well as vast improvement since April, Kuda was 11.63sec and ran 10.78sec, Tinotenda was 15.6 and ran 13.71sec,” said Mujaji.
Zimbabwe has won 18 medals at the Paralympics games since gaining independence in 1980.
The last time Zimbabwe won a medal at the prestigious global games was in 2004 when Mujaji scooped his second gold medal in Athens.
He added that there is need to expose local athletes to more competitions.
“We need to be very patient as well as scouting more talent and groom them by exposing them to big competitions.
“Both Athletes who recently represented us are the future and hope for 2028 LA Paralympic games and work should continue tirelessly,” he added.
